Once, long ago, south Georgian Bay’s Nottawasaga Lighthouse saved lives. Today, the Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society (NLPS) invites you to help us now save the Lighthouse’s life. The National Trust of Canada has placed the light on the 10 Most Endangered Historic Sites for 2016.
NLPS has a plan in place that has successfully drawn the attention of various levels of government as well as many community leaders and local citizens.
Fundraising is a must for upper levels of government to support us with property acquisition. The estimated cost to restore the Lighthouse is between $1.5 to $2 million dollars. With community involvement, we know this can be achieved.
The good news is that the interior of the building is in great condition and our engineer plans to “simply” remove the old exterior block and replace it with new material.
The first phase of the preservation project was to clear and level the area around the base of the Lighthouse, erect scaffolding around the entire structure and then shrink-wrap everything. This has been completed and serves two purposes:
• Protect the Lighthouse from further damage
• Allow us to work year-round on repairing the damage
Donating today to the “Buy a Block” fundraising campaign, you will be sharing in the dream of restoring this historic icon to its former glory.
We hope to have people like you visiting Nottawasaga Island to experience the Lighthouse close up, enjoying Georgian Bay’s oldest but newest attraction.
THANK YOU for considering giving a gift to save an integral part of our local heritage and that of the Great Lakes nautical-navigational history.
We are a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency and provide donors with a charitable tax receipt.
